Why we light scenes to look like the room

On honest light

We prefer to light scenes so they look like the room they were shot in. Adding just enough to clean the shadows, never enough to flatten them.

Why

Because the viewer can tell. A scene that looks lit-for-the-camera reads as advertising. A scene that looks like the room reads as a moment.
